Mechanical damping and softening near the Curie point of barium titanate

Conclusions

A peak in damping occurs near the Curie point.
The height and width of the peak increase with thermal rate and the inverse of frequency.
Bulk modulus softens by about a factor of four during the transition.
Poisson's ratio attains a slightly negative value during the transition.
Broadening of the transition may be due to material heterogeneity.
