FEM for Impact and Failure Analysis of Structures
This animation shows a FEM simulation of impact of a composite material tube. The tube is simply supported, and due to impact, cracks form below the impactor and propagate along the length of the tube. The simulation was performed using DYNA3D with an energy criterion for crack growth that we implemented in the program to allow for accurate crack growth simulations (this movie is about 1 Mbyte) link
